With cold and flu season right around the corner, everyone should be taking the necessary steps to protect themselves. This is especially true for kids who just went back to school and are around new friends with new germs. The best way to do this is to boost your immune system and get plenty of rest.

Since we can’t really teach you how to get more rest, we will give you a list of some foods to help you boost your immune system for the months ahead. As long as you follow these recommendations, you should be able to avoid a trip to the pediatric urgent care Las Vegas trusts.

Preliminary studies show that elderberry extract blocks the flu virus. If you get the fruit fresh, it is full of antioxidants and can help fight inflammation.

Button Mushrooms

This fungus contains selenium which has been linked to protecting the body from the flu virus. It is also full of other nutrients – B vitamins, riboflavin and niacin – that promote strong immune systems. Preliminary animal studies are even suggesting that the mushroom can fight bacteria and tumors.

Acai Berry

This well-known superfood is also high in antioxidants that help your body ward off disease. You are most likely to find it as a smoothie or dried.

The zinc in this seafood is a key part of the body’s natural healing abilities. It also seems to have antiviral properties.

This juicy fruit is great for a few reasons. First, it is made largely of water so it helps hydrate the body. Your body can protect itself from illness a lot easier when it is hydrated. It also contains an antioxidant called glutathione which is proven to help the body fight infection. Just make sure you eat close enough to the rind to get the benefits of this antioxidant.

White, red and chinese cabbages are all full of glutamine which is great for making your immune system stronger. It is also cheap and easy to find in the winter because it is in season.

One serving of almonds, about ¼ cup, contains almost half of the vitamin E you need in a day. Add that to the riboflavin, niacin and B vitamins found in this super food and you have an immune strengthening gold mine. This combination of nutrients is also good to battle stress which tends to go up during the colder months.

Grapefruits have tons of vitamin C and flavonoids that help keep your immune system going strong. You can get similar benefits from eating oranges and tangerines.

Low-Fat Yogurt

Look for yogurts that say, “live and active cultures” on the labels. Research has shown that this, in combination with the vitamin D, helps reduce your chances of getting the cold or the flu.

This is technically a cooking herb that is good for more than keeping vampires away. Garlic is full of numerous antioxidants that are particularly good at helping the immune system fight a bacteria that has been linked to ulcers and stomach cancer.
