It is a common misconception that there is only one type of arthritis. However, there are more than 100 known types of arthritis. It is a very common condition in the US and affects more than 46 million adults currently.

Because of the common misconception that all arthritis is alike, doctors have tried the same treatment on all types of arthritis. This has led to the discoveries of different types of arthritis. Since each type of arthritis is different, this means that the treatments for each type must be different. Knowing this, it is important to get the proper diagnosis so the correct treatment can be employed.

What are the most common types of arthritis?

  • Osteoarthritis. This type of arthritis is also called degenerative joint disease. This type of osteoarthritis results from the overuse of joints. It can also result from obesity, aging, or even sports activity. Athletes or dancers in college can have problems from this when they’re older. If your knees ache when you get out of bed in the morning, talk to your doctor about arthritis. It can also strike earlier in life if an injury is suffered in early childhood. As well, osteoarthritis of the hands is most often inherited and can happen in middle-aged women. Osteoarthritis is most common in joints that bear weight. It comes gradually over months or even years. In this type of condition, the cartilage gradually breaks down. Cartilage is slippery and covers the bones, but as this condition worsens, the cartilage either stops functioning or breaks down completely. For example, being overweight can cause strain on the knees and cause the cartilage to break down. A common symptom of this is hearing a grating sound between the joints, because the cartilage is so broken down that there is no cushioning of the joints.
  • Rheumatoid Arthritis. This arthritis is the most common type of inflammatory arthritis. This type of arthritis is an autoimmune disease and does not result from injuries, but from autoimmune attacks on the body. For an unknown reason, the joints are the most commonly affected areas of the body in this disease. This chronic inflammation can lead to severe joint damage and even deformities. These most often develop in areas that receive the most pressure – such as elbows, knuckles, or heels. The symptoms of this type of arthritis are much more sever than that of other types of arthritis. This type of arthritis can cause pain, fatigue, loss of appetite, and stiffness. There may also be swelling associated with this type of arthritis. Stiffness may be most common the morning.

These two types of arthritis are the most common, and affect millions of people every day. It is important to understand these symptoms and types of arthritis, so that your doctor can give you the proper treatment to combat these symptoms. Sadly, there isn’t a complete cure for arthritis, and because it is a degenerative condition, it will likely not get better. However, there are treatments that can be put into place to combat the pain and other things associated with symptoms. Visit an urgent care in Las Vegas for more information.
