For some types of jobs, DOT physicals are required by the Depart of Transportation. These types of exams are required for people who are wishing to obtain a commercial driving license. Bus and Truck drivers are required to have a commercial driver’s license and therefore must have a DOT physical.

There are some things that you may not know about DOT physicals.

  1. There will be a drug test. The drug test is going to be very strict. This drug test is going to be able to detect even the smallest trace of drugs in your system. The drugs that they will test for are amphetamines, marijuana, opiates (including heroin), cocaine and Phencyclidine (PCP).
  2. The urine test that you will be taking will not only be tested for drugs, but they will also check for the presence of protein or sugar in urine. This will help them to see if you have any other underlying medical issues such as kidney problems and diabetes.
  3. Assuming you pass the urine test, your DOT card will be valid for two years. If you do not pass the urine test then you may be given a DOT card that could last up to three months for you to have any medical issues under control.
  4. The DOT physical will also take into consideration your blood pressure. You will not be disqualified from getting your DOT card for high blood pressure, but you will be expected to keep your blood pressure under control with the proper medical treatment.
  5. There are some conditions that could disqualify you from passing the DOT physical exam. If you suffer from poor vision, some mental disorders, epilepsy, advanced heart disease, failing of the drug test, being an alcoholic, or loss or impairment of limbs, could all affect you from getting your DOT card.
