Being pregnant takes a deep toll on the body, as anyone who has been pregnant knows. However, being pregnant is also an exciting time of life; it means that you are bringing a new special child in to your world. However, as many mothers can attest, the muscle strains of pregnancy are very real and can be more than just annoying. The average weight gain of 25 to 35 pounds, combined with the increased stress placed on the body by your baby, may result in severe discomfort. Studies have shown that half of all expectant mothers will develop lower back pain at some point during their pregnancies.

While these changes sound difficult and dramatic, it is important to remember that there are things that can be done to combat the pains that may come from being pregnant. Read on to find out more.


Exercise is very important for pregnant women, but it is vital that it is done in the right way. Some women may feel too sick to exercise while pregnant, but if you have any abilities at all, it is important to do it. Be sure to consult your doctor before beginning any exercise program, but read on for exercise tips:

  • Safe exercise during pregnancy can help strengthen your muscles and remove discomfort. Try to exercise at least three times a week, and be sure to gently stretch before and after. If you weren’t active before your pregnancy, check with your doctor before starting or continuing any exercise.
  • Stationary Cycling, swimming, and walking are all relatively safe cardiovascular activities for pregnant women, because they do not require bouncing or jerking movements. Jogging can be safe if you were an avid runner before becoming pregnant, but be sure to do it carefully and under the supervision of your doctor.
  • Exercise in an area with secure footing. Falling is not good for you or your baby. Your heart rate should also not exceed 140 beats per minute during exercise. Strenuous activity should last for no more than 15 minutes at a time.
  • Stop your exercise routine if you notice any unusual symptoms such as dizziness, weakness, nausea, blurred vision, vaginal bleeding, heart palpitations, or increased swelling. These are all signs that your body cannot handle exercise at the level you wish to push it to.
