Age, fitness level, health history, and symptoms matter more than one might think. Doctors are concerned about patients agitating their internal body temperature even more, especially if it’s over 101 degrees. A tough gym sesh could be enough to send you to the hospital.

If you’re eager to get back to the weight room, don’t wait out your illness. A quick trip to the urgent care could have you back at it sooner than you think.

Listen to your body

Our bodies are a lot tougher than we give them credit for. As long as you’re feeling up to it, go to the gym and do as much as you can. Avid athletes report feeling worse if they skip their regularly scheduled physical activity. In some cases, a light workout could be just what the doctor ordered.

Be warned—lifting weight while sick can make you feel worse when you get back home, so sick days aren’t the time to up your weight or do an extra set of reps. Make sure you pass a neck check

A good rule of thumb before working out while sick is to make sure you pass a neck check. If your symptoms are below the neck (coughing, fever, exhaustion, body aches), then you need to stay home.

A neck check basically comes down to this—if you’re too exhausted, sick, and sore to get out of bed, then you’re definitely too exhausted to get on the exercise machine. Working out with a sore throat is much different than working out with an intense cough, which could be a sign of bronchitis.

If you don’t pass a neck check, you’ll probably be out of commission for a week or two.
